State leaders push for new hospital to address mental health crisis

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the significant state hospital construction project, emphasizing the need for a new facility in Jamestown. The project has already seen an investment of $12.5 million, with plans for further development. The committee is considering scheduling an additional meeting in Jamestown following the Council of State Governments conference in July to further address this initiative.

The meeting also highlighted ongoing discussions about behavioral health services in the state. Senator Coon raised concerns regarding the transportation challenges faced by law enforcement when transferring patients to the state hospital, suggesting the potential for satellite facilities to alleviate these issues. He noted that families of patients often face long travel distances, complicating their ability to visit loved ones.

In response, officials acknowledged the necessity for both inpatient and outpatient facilities, particularly for juvenile and adolescent behavioral health. They pointed out the lack of specialized facilities in the state and mentioned previous efforts to establish a 10-bed facility in Dickinson, which ultimately did not materialize due to vendor issues. The need for a comprehensive approach to mental health services remains a priority, with plans to explore options for expanding facilities across North Dakota.
