Teachers Leave Lasting Legacy as They Embrace Retirement

In a heartfelt tribute during a recent government meeting, the Bay Shore School District celebrated the remarkable careers of several dedicated educators who have significantly impacted the community.

Miss Hotelling, who began her teaching career on September 1, 1993, was recognized for her pioneering work in English as a Second Language (ESL). Initially splitting her time between senior high school and Brooke Avenue Elementary, she collaborated with colleagues to develop the foundational ESL curriculum still in use today. Her efforts led to the establishment of the ESL Summer School in 1997, and she became the first ESL teacher in the district to achieve dual certification in ESL and Content Language Acquisition in 2017. Colleagues praised her engaging teaching style, which infused humor and warmth into the classroom, fostering both academic success and personal growth among her students. Following her retirement in February, Miss Hotelling plans to travel and enjoy family time in South Carolina.

The meeting also honored Miss Lombardo, a paraprofessional at South Country School for over two decades. Known for her welcoming demeanor and flexibility, she worked across both special and general education classrooms, leaving a lasting impression on students and staff alike. Her mentorship of fellow paraprofessionals was highlighted as a key contribution to the school community. In retirement, Miss Lombardo looks forward to spending time with family, gardening, and taking life at a leisurely pace.

Additionally, Mr. Richard Marco, who began his career at Bay Shore High School in 1993 as a special education teacher, was acknowledged for his commitment to meeting the diverse needs of his students.

The meeting served as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact these educators have had on their students and the broader community, with heartfelt wishes for their future endeavors in retirement.
