During a recent government meeting, two exceptional students from Bay Shore High School were recognized for their outstanding achievements in the New York State CLIA biochemistry program. Kathleen Rodriguez and Pamela Orlando, both members of the class of 2024, were honored for earning the prestigious New York State Seal of Biliteracy.
This award is granted to students who demonstrate exceptional proficiency in English and at least one other world language by graduation. The seal, which is displayed on diplomas and accompanied by a certificate and medallion, is awarded by the commissioner of the New York State Department of Education to those who meet the rigorous criteria established by the Board of Regents.
The New York State Seal of Biliteracy serves multiple purposes: it celebrates linguistic diversity, promotes language studies, and identifies graduates with valuable multilingual skills for employers. It also provides universities with insights into applicants and underscores the importance of language instruction in education.
Kathleen Rodriguez plans to attend Lehigh University, where she will pursue a joint major in international relations and modern languages and literature, aspiring to become a foreign service officer or diplomat. Pamela Orlando will attend Stony Brook University, majoring in studio art with aspirations to become an art educator and court translator.
The meeting concluded with a commendation for both students, highlighting their dedication and hard work, and expressing gratitude to the various supporters of the program, including the Bay Shore High School administration and the Board of Education. Their achievements set a precedent for future students to aspire to.
