Community voices concerns over controversial road expansion project

In a recent government meeting, commissioners unanimously approved several motions, including the appointment of a new member to the board and the rescheduling of a key community redevelopment agency meeting. The meeting highlighted the ongoing planning for the 2024 Silver Springs Community Redevelopment Area Master Plan, which will now take place on August 6, 2024, at the McPherson Governmental Campus.

During the public comment section, residents voiced concerns regarding the Southwest 38th Street Expansion Project. Daniel Savillich, a local resident and volunteer archaeologist, criticized the proposed alternatives for the project, arguing that both options would significantly impact residential properties and reduce property values. Another resident, Jerry Guthrie, addressed the board regarding the need for permanent fairgrounds in Marion County. He expressed concerns about the loss of the county fair's home due to the purchase of the I-75 Flea Market, which is being converted into a retention pond. Guthrie proposed several potential sites for new fairgrounds and emphasized the importance of having a designated venue for community events, particularly for youth engagement.
