City secures $157500 grant to combat gun violence

The Auburn City Council convened recently to discuss two significant resolutions aimed at enhancing local infrastructure and public safety.

The first resolution, numbered 97 of 2024, authorizes engineering services for the design of the Burgess Street Culvert replacement project. The city has secured $1,305,000 in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through the 2021 Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Following a competitive request for proposals, Prudent Engineering of East Syracuse was selected to provide design and engineering services for a fee of $114,940.24. The project is expected to commence soon, with a completion deadline set for April 2026.

In a separate resolution, numbered 98 of 2024, the council accepted a grant of $157,500 from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services under the Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) Initiative. This funding will support the Auburn Police Department in covering overtime, equipment, travel, and community outreach efforts over the next fiscal year, starting July 1, 2024. Notably, this grant requires no local match, easing the financial burden on the city.
