During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the implementation of Act 138, which establishes a pretrial supervision program aimed at enhancing public safety. This program, part of Senate Bill 195, allows courts to order supervision for defendants deemed significant risks, particularly those with multiple pending charges.
The Department of Corrections (DOC) will oversee the program, conducting investigations and submitting reports to the courts to determine eligibility. Defendants with five or more pending dockets may qualify for this supervision, which can include various monitoring methods such as automated reminders, phone calls, in-person meetings, or remote check-ins.
However, a significant concern raised during the meeting was the program's funding. Approximately $687,000 has been allocated, but officials indicated that this amount is insufficient to support statewide operations effectively. The discussion highlighted the need for additional resources to ensure the program can function as intended and adequately supervise individuals awaiting trial.
