In a recent government meeting, officials from the California Office of Emergency Services (OES) and Cal Fire discussed the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing emergency management and wildfire response efforts.
OES highlighted its Calabas Fire Integrated Real-Time Intelligence System (FIRIS), which utilizes aerial mapping and plans to automate image analysis from aircraft. The agency is also implementing real-time language translation services at disaster recovery centers and employing AI to analyze catastrophic plans, identify gaps, and improve compliance across emergency preparedness initiatives. OES officials emphasized their commitment to integrating AI technologies safely and effectively to enhance operational efficiency and safety standards.
Philip Selig, Chief of the Fire Intelligence Program at Cal Fire, elaborated on the agency's use of AI for wildfire detection and monitoring. In partnership with UC San Diego's Alert California program, Cal Fire has deployed a network of high-definition cameras equipped with AI algorithms to expedite fire detection. This system can identify anomalies in real-time, often alerting emergency responders before a 911 call is made. Between September and December 2023, the AI system detected 190 wildfires, with many kept under one acre due to rapid response.
Cal Fire is also leveraging AI for predictive modeling of wildfire behavior, moving beyond traditional methods that rely on historical data. The agency has partnered with Technoslva to develop the Wildfire Analyst, which uses machine learning to analyze various data sets, including weather conditions and topography, to improve predictions of fire spread and intensity. This innovative approach not only enhances immediate response capabilities but also aids in assessing long-term fire risks, contributing to a more resilient landscape.
The meeting underscored California's commitment to adopting advanced technologies in emergency management, positioning the state as a leader in the integration of AI for public safety. Both OES and Cal Fire are actively exploring new technologies to bolster their efforts in protecting communities and managing wildfire risks effectively.
