Central High School's Speech and Debate Team recently made headlines at the National Speech and Debate tournament, showcasing impressive achievements and recognition for both students and their coach. Brianna Wollman, a finalist for Student of the Year, represented the school among six finalists selected from over 100 districts. Although she did not win the title, her participation highlighted the significant impact of speech and debate on her personal growth and community involvement.
Carrie Canda, the school's coach, was honored as the National Coach of the Year during the tournament, marking a significant milestone in his 16-year coaching career. Canda's dedication to the program has been instrumental in its success, with multiple students achieving top rankings in various events. Notably, Wollman ranked in the top 60 for impromptu speaking, while teammate Caleb Ringenberg placed in the top 100 for extemporaneous debate, competing against a field of over 1,500 participants.
The tournament also served as a platform for Canda to reflect on the growth of the program, crediting past and present students for their contributions. The recognition of both Canda and Wollman underscores the collaborative spirit of the team and the supportive environment fostered at Central High School. As they look ahead, the team is eager to build on their experiences and continue striving for excellence in future competitions.
