Road Improvement Plans Spark Community Concerns

Pine Hill Road emerged as a primary concern, with officials noting numerous complaints regarding potholes and drainage issues. The road's scenic nature complicates repairs, as it may require environmental permitting and careful design considerations. Proposals for the project have been solicited from engineering firms, with bids closely aligned at around $296,000 for design work. Funding sources include $177,500 from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and an additional allocation from Chapter 90 funds.

The discussion also touched on the potential inclusion of sidewalks in the design. However, officials cautioned that existing sidewalks may be on private property without easements, complicating any plans for relocation or expansion. The design process will consider the feasibility of sidewalks, particularly in areas where space is limited due to natural features like stone walls and steep slopes.

Financially, the town faces significant challenges, with an estimated $14 million needed for overall road maintenance. Current Chapter 90 funds total approximately $2.8 million, but officials emphasized that this figure does not account for underlying infrastructure issues, such as failing pipes or inadequate base materials, which could further complicate road repairs.
