Community Engagement Sparks Historic Cabin Restoration Efforts

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed progress on the Essenlog cabin project, with updates on the specifications manual and a materials list being drafted by Pattern Eyes. Council member Rambo, who has downed trees on his property, expressed interest in donating materials to the city. The possibility of making the materials list public was raised, as it could encourage community contributions.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of engaging the public in the cabin's interior design once construction is complete. Officials acknowledged the potential for community involvement in furnishing the cabin, which could enhance its historical authenticity.

In terms of project bidding, several potential contractors were identified, including Workhorse Construction and Bombshell Construction, with plans to advertise the bidding process widely.

Additionally, the meeting noted that Dr. Michael Allen, a key figure in the project, will be transitioning to a new role at West Virginia University but will continue to contribute remotely, presenting his final report in August.

Lastly, the commission discussed the upcoming historic preservation fund application cycle. As a certified local government, Wildwood is eligible for matching funds from the State Historic Preservation Office. The department proposed applying for funding to support training for commission members, emphasizing the need for well-trained officials to effectively serve the community.
