In a recent meeting of the Lancaster County Council, the Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee reviewed nine grant applications totaling $240,352, but only $80,197 was available for distribution. The council approved funding for several projects aimed at boosting tourism, including $26,000 for the Carolina Chile Championship, $22,500 for the Lancaster County SC 250 Committee, and $10,000 each for the Lancaster County Council of Arts, Lindsay Pettus Greenway, and Lancaster County Community Center.
The committee's chair, Haskell Falconberry, emphasized that the funded projects are designed to attract visitors to the county, highlighting the importance of events that generate overnight stays. However, the decision not to fund the Lancaster County Society of Historic Preservation sparked discussion among council members. Concerns were raised about the society's request for $65,000 to support its archives, which was deemed not aligned with the goal of attracting tourists.
Council members expressed disappointment over the lack of funding for the historic preservation efforts, arguing that such initiatives also contribute to drawing visitors to the area. Suggestions were made to amend the funding allocations to provide some financial support to the society by reducing the amounts awarded to other recipients. A proposal was put forth to take $1,000 from each of the five funded projects to allocate $5,000 to the archives.
The council is considering options for future funding and will explore whether additional resources can be identified to support the historical preservation efforts, reflecting a commitment to balancing tourism promotion with the preservation of the county's cultural heritage.
