During a recent Cambridge City Council meeting, members discussed the city's ongoing efforts to address the climate crisis through workforce development initiatives. The meeting, which utilized remote participation as authorized by a recent state act, was marked by the presentation of the first annual report on the Green Jobs Ordinance, passed in March 2023.
Assistant City Manager Iram Farooq highlighted the ordinance's goal of preparing local residents for jobs in the growing green economy, which includes sectors such as HVAC, energy efficiency, solar panel installation, and renewable energy. The council emphasized the importance of connecting residents with training and employment opportunities in these fields, which are expected to see significant job growth.
The report, presented by Sue Walsh from the Office of Workforce Development, noted the establishment of a full-time Green Job Specialist position aimed at outreach and recruitment within the green job sectors. The hiring process attracted around 80 applicants, and the selected candidate is expected to start next month. The council acknowledged that the report was slightly delayed but expressed gratitude for the patience shown by its members.
Looking ahead, the council anticipates that next year's report will provide more detailed data on outreach efforts and the demographics of residents entering training programs. The meeting underscored the city's commitment to sustainability and the creation of good local jobs as part of its broader climate action strategy.
