City Council Delays Key Zoning Decision Amid Resident Concerns

In a recent city council meeting, members unanimously approved the agenda item E1, with Council Member Girders absent. The council then proceeded to discuss item E2, which pertains to the rezoning of seven publicly owned parcels near Tropicana Field, a significant step in the ongoing development of the historic Gas Plant District.

Planning and Development Services Director Elizabeth Abernathy presented the second public hearing on the rezoning, which follows a previous vote in June that scheduled this hearing. The proposed ordinance aims to change the zoning from Downtown Center 2 (DC2) to Downtown Center 1 (DC1), aligning with the master plan approved by the council in July.

During the discussion, Council Member Driscoll raised concerns regarding a resident's email expressing worries about the development, particularly regarding traffic and parking implications. Driscoll emphasized the importance of addressing resident concerns and suggested that more time was needed to gather information before proceeding with the vote.

The council deliberated on whether to continue the item for further review. Ultimately, a motion was made to postpone the decision until the next council meeting on August 8, 2024, allowing for additional communication with the concerned resident and further examination of the traffic management plan associated with the development. This motion passed unanimously, ensuring that community feedback remains a priority as the project moves forward.
