Senior center expands vital services with new funding boost

The King County Senior Activity Center has received significant funding to enhance its operations and services for seniors, particularly in light of challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past few years, the center has been awarded substantial financial support, including $404,689 from the King County Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy, which has been instrumental in maintaining operations from late 2019 through 2023.

In 2023, the center was granted an additional $6,466 specifically for transportation services aimed at assisting seniors in need. Following a successful voter approval in August 2023 for a new round of funding, the center received $154,538 to sustain operations for an additional six months while new funding applications were processed.

Looking ahead, the center has secured a new contract worth $827,366, effective from July 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026. This new funding represents an 11% increase in operating support compared to the previous contract, despite a shorter duration of two and a half years compared to the earlier four and a quarter years.

The center has adapted its services to meet the evolving needs of the senior population, particularly those who are underserved and isolated. Key initiatives include hiring a full-time outreach coordinator, providing free fitness center passes, and offering a variety of health and wellness programs such as tai chi and counseling. The center has also established partnerships with community organizations to enhance service offerings and cultural exchange.

Notable programs include transportation services for medical appointments, social events like \"speed friending,\" and the launch of a virtual senior center program aimed at reaching isolated seniors. These efforts reflect the center's commitment to enriching the lives of seniors in the community and addressing the challenges they face.
