In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the allocation of $2 million from the Federal Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) Program, addressing concerns about its impact on the ongoing housing crisis. Alder members sought clarification on whether these funds would directly support emergency rental assistance or be redirected elsewhere.
The funds in question are part of a leftover allocation from the ERA grant, which has seen expanded flexibility from the federal government, allowing for their use in affordable housing development. Officials confirmed that the $2 million will be directed towards a youth-focused housing development at 1202 South Park Street, effectively replacing previously allocated American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for that project. This strategic move aims to utilize the more flexible ARPA funds to cover budget gaps for a related shelter project.
During the meeting, the total construction bid for the Bartleone shelter was also discussed, amounting to approximately $22.77 million, including an 8% contingency for unforeseen construction issues. Alder members emphasized that since 2021, the city has contributed $8 million from the levy towards this project, with the majority of funding sourced from federal and other grants.
The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote in favor of the funding allocation, signaling a commitment to addressing the pressing housing needs in the community.
