Bridgeport Preschool Closure Sparks Urgent Childcare Crisis

In a recent public meeting, officials discussed the closure of the Bridgeport Preschool, which operated under a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD). The preschool, which served low and moderate-income families, was funded from August 2021 until its closure in June 2024 due to a lack of qualified staff.

The Eastern Sierra Unified School District (ESUSD) managed the preschool, ensuring compliance with various regulations and providing essential services. During its operation, the preschool served a total of 52 low and moderate-income families, although only five children were enrolled at the time of closure. The program required that at least 51% of its attendees come from low-income households, a criterion that was met throughout its duration.

The closure has raised concerns about the availability of childcare services in Bridgeport, particularly as the community faces challenges in finding qualified providers. The sole teacher at the preschool transitioned to a different role within the ESUSD, leaving the facility without staff to continue operations. Officials acknowledged the pressing need for childcare in the area, noting that the lack of services could hinder parents' ability to work.

Looking ahead, there is hope for the future of childcare in Bridgeport. A new round of CDBG applications has opened, with a deadline of December 30. Officials expressed their intent to reapply for funding to support childcare initiatives, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with local educational institutions and community organizations to address the ongoing childcare crisis.

The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote to accept the closeout report for the grant, marking the end of the preschool's funding cycle while leaving the door open for potential future programs aimed at supporting families in the region.
