City Council Approves Key Nominations Amid Controversy

In a recent government meeting, city officials discussed key topics including property tax exemptions for seniors and nominations for regional council positions.

The council confirmed that the appraisal district requires notification from the city regarding the homestead exemption for the upcoming year by July 1. Currently, residents aged 65 and older benefit from a tax freeze established in 2019, which maintains their property tax rates at that year's levels unless property values decrease. This freeze is crucial for seniors, as it protects them from rising property taxes.

Additionally, the council addressed the nomination of representatives to the 2024 Regional Transportation Council (RTC). Councilman John Keating from Frisco was initially the elected representative, but recent communications revealed that Frisco is nominating Tammy Meinershagen instead. The council expressed support for this change, recognizing the importance of collaboration with Frisco due to its larger voting power in the RTC.

The meeting also included a vote on the nomination of Jim Carter to the Denco 911 area board of managers for another two-year term, which passed unanimously. Carter, who currently serves as the secretary of the board, was the only nominee from most cities in the area, with the exception of Highland Village, which proposed its own candidate.

The meeting concluded with plans to enter an executive session to discuss potential real estate transactions and financial incentives for a business prospect, indicating ongoing efforts to attract economic development to the area.
