Community artists unite to create peace sculpture in park

In a recent government meeting, local artists German Chiriboga and Jose Criollo presented an ambitious proposal for a new sculptural installation at Peace Park in Worcester. The project aims to enhance the park's aesthetic and symbolic significance, reflecting themes of peace and community engagement.

Chiriboga, the resident artist at Casita Cultura Latina, detailed the concept of the sculpture, which will feature two intertwined red maple leaves symbolizing change and renewal, wrapping around the silhouette of a dove to represent peace. The design, crafted from recycled materials such as metal and glass, is intended to interact with the park's natural light and surroundings, creating a dynamic visual experience for visitors.

The artists emphasized the importance of community input in the design process, noting that feedback from local residents and organizations helped shape the project. The sculpture, standing approximately six feet tall, is designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring it does not obstruct park operations or pose safety risks, particularly for children.

The proposal received enthusiastic support from city officials, who recognized the potential for the artwork to foster a sense of ownership and pride within the community. Concerns regarding the sculpture's placement and safety were addressed, with assurances that the Parks Division would collaborate closely with the artists to finalize details.

In a related initiative, Central Mass Trans Visibility introduced plans for a garden at a new park on Seaver Street, aimed at honoring the lives lost to violence within the transgender community. The garden will feature tulips planted in memory of those who have died, with the intention of creating a space for reflection and celebration of diversity. This project seeks to raise awareness and foster community solidarity, particularly in light of increasing violence and discrimination against transgender individuals.

Both projects highlight a commitment to enhancing public spaces in Worcester through art and community involvement, aiming to create environments that promote peace, reflection, and inclusivity.
