Jackson County votes on tax to keep Chiefs in town

In a recent government meeting, Jackson County officials discussed a proposed amendment to a sales tax ordinance aimed at retaining the Kansas City Chiefs football team in the area. The original proposal sought to impose a county-wide capital improvement sales tax of 3/16ths of 1% for a period of 25 years. However, during the meeting, an amendment was introduced to change the tax rate to 1/8th of 1%.

The amendment was prompted by legal advice indicating that the state statute does not allow for a sales tax rate of 3/16ths. The sponsor of the amendment explained that 1/8th is the closest permissible alternative and would still result in a lower total tax burden compared to the original proposal. This change is seen as a strategic move to allow for potential future tax initiatives while ensuring compliance with state regulations.

The meeting included a discussion on whether the new tax would effectively extend the existing tax or represent a new tax altogether. Officials clarified that the proposed tax would begin after the current one expires, which is set to cover the Truman Sports Complex until 2031.

The ordinance will be submitted to qualified voters in Jackson County during the general election scheduled for November 5, 2024. The outcome of this vote could significantly impact the county's ability to support local sports teams and infrastructure improvements.
