County votes on crucial tax to keep Chiefs in town

In a recent government meeting, several key contracts and resolutions were discussed and approved, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance public services and infrastructure in Jackson County, Missouri.

The meeting began with the recommendation to adopt a contract for furnishing software maintenance services for the county's combat website, with Civic Plus of Manhattan, Kansas, at a cost of $13,087. This was categorized as a sole source purchase, indicating that Civic Plus was the only vendor capable of providing the required services.

Additionally, the Justice and Law Enforcement Committee recommended the adoption of a 12-month contract with 911 Custom of Olathe, Kansas, for the furnishing, installation, and repair of emergency equipment for the sheriff's office. This contract also qualifies as a sole source purchase.

The Public Works Committee introduced a 24-month service contract with J and A Traffic Products of Blue Springs, Missouri, for traffic signs and supplies, which is expected to support the public works and parks departments.

Another significant contract discussed was for appointment management software for the collections department, awarded to Q List Software of Pasadena, California, at a cost of $16,736. This too was approved as a sole source purchase.

The meeting also included the authorization for the county executive to execute a memorandum of understanding with the Carpenter's District Council of Greater Saint Louis regarding employment terms for members of its bargaining unit within the prosecuting attorney's office.

In addition to these contracts, two proposed measures were introduced for the upcoming general election on November 5, 2024. The first proposal seeks to impose a countywide capital improvement sales tax of 3/8 of 1% for 40 years to retain the Kansas City Chiefs sports team in Jackson County. The second proposal aims to amend the Jackson County charter to allow for an elected assessor, rather than an appointed one, among other changes.

The meeting concluded with a motion to adopt the consent agenda, which included all discussed resolutions and contracts, receiving majority approval from the members present. The discussions reflect a proactive approach by the county to enhance public safety, infrastructure, and governance.
