City Council Considers Major Overhaul of Youth Soccer League

During a recent council meeting, significant discussions centered around the proposed tax rate and the potential management of youth soccer leagues in Forney.

The council deliberated on a motion to approve a tax rate of 0.42, which aligns with the no new revenue rate set by Kaufman County at $0.42. This rate is designed to generate the same amount of tax revenue as the previous year. The proposed tax rate of 0.40 was initially recommended by staff but was ultimately amended to 0.42 following a motion by council member Ms. Zalgado, which received a second from Mr. Weatherford. The council's vote resulted in a tie, necessitating the mayor's tie-breaking vote in favor of the motion.

In addition to the tax discussions, the council explored a proposal from the Forney Soccer Association regarding the management of youth soccer leagues. Currently, the association operates the leagues with part-time employees and volunteers, while the city provides the facilities. The proposal suggests that the city take over the management of the soccer leagues, similar to its recent successful operation of youth baseball and softball leagues.

The council discussed the benefits of this transition, including improved communication and responsiveness to parents and coaches, as well as the potential for better management of league operations. However, challenges such as staffing and financial implications were also highlighted. The proposed plan would require hiring additional full-time staff to manage the soccer leagues effectively, with discussions indicating that this would not be feasible until the next budget cycle.
