Operation 2540 launches urgent hygiene drive for wildfire victims

During a recent meeting of the Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee, members emphasized the importance of professionalism as the session was being live-streamed and recorded for public access. The meeting commenced with a roll call, confirming a full quorum with all members present except for one, who is in the process of completing paperwork.

The committee approved the minutes from the previous meeting held on May 16, 2024, with unanimous consent. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a presentation by Jose Liaz Molinar, president of the nonprofit organization Operation 2540. Molinar outlined the organization's mission to assist vulnerable populations, including orphans and battered women, and highlighted their current initiative in response to a recent wildfire in New Mexico.

Molinar, along with project manager Paulina Herbert, proposed a plan to provide essential hygiene products to women and girls affected by the wildfire. They reported that approximately 50% of the displaced population of around 8,000 individuals are female, with a significant number being girls aged 12 to 52. The organization aims to raise $3,000 to supply hygiene products, including feminine hygiene items, body wash, and deodorants, to support the recovery efforts of those impacted.

The committee expressed support for the initiative, recognizing the urgent need for assistance in the affected community. However, the meeting faced technical difficulties with audio and video, which temporarily interrupted proceedings. The committee is expected to continue discussions on the proposal and other agenda items in future meetings.
