City moves to demolish dangerous fire-damaged property

During a recent government meeting, significant discussions centered around property maintenance issues in El Paso, particularly concerning a property identified as 7864 West Drive. The meeting highlighted concerns regarding the property's structural integrity and potential demolition due to substantial fire damage.

Christopher Morales from the City of El Paso's Property Maintenance and Housing Division presented the case, detailing the property's history and current condition. Built around 1945, the single-family dwelling has faced multiple inspections and violations since 2018, culminating in a certified notice of violation sent to the owner, Maria R. Granados, on May 12, 2024. The property has been deemed a dangerous structure, prompting the commission to consider ordering its demolition.

In addition to the demolition discussions, the meeting also addressed financial concerns related to cleanup costs associated with the property. A resident raised questions about a $5,000 charge linked to cleanup efforts, expressing confusion over its origin and relevance to the commission's current proceedings. Officials clarified that the cleanup payments were separate from the commission's responsibilities and suggested that inquiries regarding liens and payments should be directed to the comptroller's office.

The commission ultimately recommended a 90-day period for rehabilitation efforts, followed by a 30-day window for potential demolition if necessary. The meeting concluded with a vote in favor of these recommendations, emphasizing the city's commitment to addressing dangerous structures and ensuring community safety.
