City Council Debates Controversial Color Choices for New Development

During a recent government meeting, discussions centered on a proposed site plan application for the Saratoga Town Center, located at the intersection of Crossroads Boulevard and Commerce Road. The application seeks to establish several restaurant uses within the building, which has been confirmed to comply with existing zoning codes.

A key point of contention arose regarding the architectural design, specifically the color palette of the building. The current proposal features multiple shades of gray, which may exceed the city code stipulation that no more than 75% of any building elevation can consist of a single material or color. City staff expressed concerns that the proposed gray shades could violate this regulation and requested the applicant to consider an alternative color scheme.

The applicant presented two options: one maintaining the gray palette and another incorporating a dark red brick for the lower third of the building's elevation. Visual representations of both options were shared, alongside comparisons to nearby buildings to illustrate how the proposed designs would fit within the existing aesthetic of the area.

The planning commission had previously reviewed the proposal on June 27 and recommended approval, favoring the alternative option with the dark red brick. The council is now considering the recommendations and has invited the applicant to address any further questions from council members.
