Director vows to overhaul Newark's Public Works for better service

During a recent government meeting, city officials discussed several key initiatives aimed at improving public services and infrastructure in Newark.

Director Woolley provided an update on the installation of beeping traffic lights designed to assist visually impaired pedestrians. He confirmed that the lights have been deployed in high-traffic areas, including schools and the arts and education district, with plans to expand their reach citywide as budget allows.

The Department of Public Works (DPW), led by Director Dean, addressed ongoing challenges in waste collection services. Dean acknowledged past inconveniences and emphasized the department's commitment to enhancing service quality. He outlined plans for decentralizing operations by opening community service centers in various wards, including the North, West, South, and East Wards, to ensure more efficient service delivery.

Dean also announced a vision for DPW to operate 24/7, highlighting the importance of maintaining a clean and environmentally safe city. He mentioned upcoming initiatives, such as billboards promoting mattress pickup and reporting illegal dumping, aimed at increasing community engagement and visibility.

Council members expressed their support for these initiatives, with Councilman Gonzalez raising questions about operational costs, specifically regarding fuel for the city’s fleet. The meeting concluded with a commitment from DPW to improve services and better meet the needs of Newark residents.
