City Council Approves Controversial Wastewater Rate Increases

During a recent New Bedford City Council meeting, councilors gathered to discuss significant updates regarding proposed wastewater rate increases and other financial matters. Council President Carney announced the absence of Councilors Bridal Ferreira and Derek Baptiste, who provided written notices explaining their inability to attend due to work and family commitments, respectively.

The council moved swiftly to address key agenda items, starting with a communication from President Carney calling for a special meeting on July 8, 2024, to consider orders related to updated wastewater rates. This was followed by a proposal from Mayor Mitchell, which included two scenarios for a wastewater rate increase of approximately 4.3% to 10.2%, set to take effect on July 1, 2024. The proposed rates were detailed as $7.39 and $7.81.

The council unanimously voted to place these proposals on file for further consideration. Additionally, a report from the finance committee recommended the adoption of an order for the transfer of $2,730 from wastewater retained earnings for the FY 25 wastewater budget. This motion was also passed with an 8-0 vote.

In a procedural move, the council decided to take no further action on one of the proposed orders, indicating a streamlined approach to their financial discussions. The meeting concluded with a request for a presentation from the Department of Public Infrastructure (DPI) regarding the rate increases, signaling ongoing efforts to keep the public informed about changes that may impact residents.
