Plano ISD revamps transfer policy amid school closures

In a recent meeting, the Plano Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees discussed a significant modification to its student transfer policy in response to anticipated campus closures and rezoning. The proposed changes aim to prioritize students affected by these transitions, ensuring a smoother adjustment process for families.

The board introduced a tiered system for transfer applications, categorizing students into four distinct tiers. Tier 1 includes those directly impacted by campus closures and rezoning, while Tier 2 encompasses students who will experience changes in their high school feeder patterns. Tier 3 consists of students currently on transfers, and Tier 4 includes those seeking transfers to unaffected campuses. The new policy will allow transfers to be processed on a first-come, first-served basis within each tier, rather than as a blanket policy.

The resolution, which is set to remain in effect until June 26, 2026, aims to streamline the transfer process and provide clarity for families navigating the changes. The application window for transfers will be shortened, closing on June 18, 2024, at 11:59 PM, to allow for timely processing.

Board members emphasized the importance of effective communication regarding these changes. Plans are in place to inform families through various channels, including emails, social media, and community meetings. The district aims to ensure that all families, particularly those from multilingual backgrounds, receive clear and accessible information about the new transfer policy and application process.
