Town moves to transform eyesore site into vibrant gateway

In a recent government meeting, officials introduced an ordinance to authorize the purchase of the former Jiffy Lube site located at 200 South Avenue West, contingent upon receiving a grant from the Economic Development Authority (EDA). This property, which has been an eyesore for over a decade, is eligible for an EDA grant that would cover 80% of its appraised value. The town plans to invest no more than $250,000 towards the purchase, with hopes of enhancing the site with pedestrian safety features, public art, and streetscape improvements, creating a welcoming gateway to Westfield. The town expects to hear about the grant award in September, and the purchase will only proceed if the grant is approved.

Additionally, the Finance Policy Committee presented 21 resolutions, including a contract for upgrades to the council chambers and conference room, aimed at improving sound management and visual capabilities. Significant grants were also approved, including $168,049 from the NJACo Infrastructure program to support the Board of Health and $85,303 from the national opioid settlement to fund the municipal alliance program.

Emergency appropriations not exceeding $340,000 were authorized for the replacement of a rooftop HVAC unit at Town Hall, which services multiple town departments. The meeting also included discussions on bond ordinances for purchasing a new fire engine and refurbishing an older model, as well as funding for pool filtration system replacements.

The Code Review and Town Property Committee highlighted several ordinances, including a temporary access easement for a property with Verizon cell antennas, amendments to the filming ordinance to align with state regulations, and new rules governing unsolicited materials distribution. A notable change allows food trucks to operate in the central business district, specifically for licensed craft breweries, enhancing local food options.

These discussions reflect the town's ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, public spaces, and community services, while also addressing regulatory updates to support local businesses.
