Principal saves swimmer and lifeguard earns lifesaver award

In a recent meeting of the Brownsville Independent School District (BISD), Principal Michael Moreno of Perez Elementary was honored with the Superintendent's Lifesaver Award for his heroic actions during a rescue at South Padre Island. On April 28, 2024, Moreno, witnessing a swimmer and a lifeguard in distress approximately 50 yards offshore, bravely swam out to assist them. His quick response ensured both individuals were brought to safety, with the swimmer recovering without needing further medical assistance.

Moreno's background as a former lifeguard in Austin during his college years played a crucial role in his ability to execute the rescue effectively. The incident occurred just before the peak summer season, highlighting the importance of water safety in the area. Superintendent Dr. Jesus Chavez commended Moreno for his dedication and courage, emphasizing the pride the district takes in having such a committed leader within the community.

Additionally, the meeting included a financial report presented by Dr. Thomas and Mr. Alex Caspelos, detailing the district's financial status as of May 31, 2024. Further discussions on the financial health of BISD are expected in upcoming meetings.
