Lawmakers push for historic Women Veterans Day recognition

In a recent government meeting, lawmakers expressed strong support for a bill aimed at establishing a formal Women Veterans Day, making their territory the second to recognize this important occasion. The initiative, which has already been adopted by 21 states, seeks to honor the contributions and sacrifices of women veterans and their families.

Senator Kanata emphasized the significance of the bill, acknowledging that while the recognition may be overdue, it is crucial to celebrate the service of women veterans. He also highlighted the often-overlooked role of families who support veterans, noting the emotional challenges they face during deployments.

Majority Leader Senator Shelton thanked colleagues for their backing and recognized community leaders Corinna Balesta and Anthony Tyrone for hosting an inaugural brunch to celebrate Women Veterans Day. Shelton shared her journey of introducing the bill, inspired by a fellow veteran from Wisconsin who advocated for similar legislation across the country. She credited Colonel Joe Mofnes, the governor's liaison to veterans, for encouraging her to pursue the bill and for his ongoing support throughout the legislative process.

The meeting underscored a collective commitment to honoring the sacrifices of women veterans and their families, with lawmakers eager to see the bill passed and officially recognized in their territory.
