New DORA initiative allows outdoor drinking in local hotspots

Established in the past couple of years, DORAs allow patrons to purchase alcoholic beverages from local establishments and enjoy them in designated outdoor spaces, enhancing the social atmosphere in areas like Jeffersonville and Fort Wayne.

The meeting highlighted specific boundaries for these areas to address concerns about potential disorderly conduct. For instance, in the lakefront DORA, patrons can enjoy drinks while walking to nearby attractions, such as the lighthouse or the beach, but must remain within defined limits to ensure responsible consumption. The downtown DORA has stricter boundaries, preventing individuals from carrying drinks across streets to maintain order.

Officials emphasized that local businesses would benefit from this initiative, as patrons are encouraged to support them rather than bringing their own alcohol. Bartenders will also be required to monitor patrons' sobriety levels to prevent over-serving.
