In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the advancement of the Saint Gobta 1 trail project, which aims to extend the existing trail from Shadow Mist to Evers Road. Currently, the trail ends at the Bandier Road Bridal, but plans are in place to connect it through the Hemanor Indian Natural Firebreak and Raymond Grama Park. This extension, known as Segment 2, has received funding from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
To move forward, the city must sign an advanced funding agreement, which will allow for the review of engineering plans that are currently at 30% completion. The project has faced delays due to personnel issues at TxDOT, but if approved, the review process is expected to begin in late summer 2024, with construction slated to start by August.
The funding structure for the project includes an 80-20 reimbursement program, where TxDOT will cover 80% of the costs, while the city will be responsible for the remaining 20%. The estimated total cost of the project is approximately $1.599 million, although final figures will be determined once bids are received.
City officials emphasized the importance of this trail extension, noting that citizens have been anticipating its completion since 2013. The proposed trail will ultimately connect to the San Antonio trail system, creating a continuous pathway to the medical center, enhancing accessibility and recreational opportunities for the community. The city staff has recommended approval of the resolution to authorize the advanced funding agreement, which is a crucial step in bringing this long-awaited project to fruition.
