Mayors unite to save schools from decommissioning

In a recent government meeting, key discussions centered around the acquisition of the JP Torres building and the decommissioning of several schools, including Inalajan Elementary and Bridal School. Mayor Rivera highlighted the need for an updated resolution from the Mayor's Policy Council (MPC) for Chief Bridal, as the existing resolution is outdated.

The meeting also addressed concerns regarding the Guam Department of Education (GDOE) and its process for decommissioning schools. The superintendent has released a list of schools slated for decommissioning, but mayors expressed frustration over the lack of community engagement in the decision-making process. Stakeholder surveys have been primarily distributed through student portals, limiting access for the broader community.

To enhance community involvement, it was suggested that mayors, including Mayor Tony and Mayor Kevin, host a meeting with the superintendent and his decommissioning team. This would provide an opportunity for residents to voice their concerns and recommendations regarding the future of their local schools.

The meeting concluded with a transition to discussions on the user fee schedule, indicating ongoing efforts to address community needs and fiscal responsibilities.
