Budget hearing reveals significant property tax decrease

The Commissioners Court convened today to discuss the proposed fiscal year 2025 budget, which is set to decrease property tax revenue by $1,665,303, marking a 2.41% reduction from the previous year. The budget, filed on August 15 and available for public review, includes a tax rate reduction from $0.4416 to $0.3958. However, the overall levy will increase by $2,164,511 due to new properties added to the tax roll.

During the public hearing, no citizens voiced comments or concerns regarding the budget proposal. The court also addressed salary increases for elected officials, which will align with a 5% increase for county employees, with some exceptions due to salary grievances.

In other reports, Precinct 2 Commissioner Yardley highlighted ongoing maintenance efforts, including pothole repairs and drainage work. He also reported on recent meetings attended, including the Portland Community Center Development Corporation, where the FY 24-25 budget was adopted, and the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries annual meeting, which approved a budget that includes funding for local projects, such as the Fred Jones Nature Sanctuary.

The meeting concluded without public input, and the court moved on to other agenda items.
