Westchester power fee hike raises concerns for residents

The increase, attributed largely to inflation and rising operational costs, reflects the challenges of managing a program that serves approximately 145,000 accounts across the county.

The program has been in operation for nine years, during which time expenses have consistently risen, necessitating the fee adjustment. Officials highlighted the significant regulatory compliance and legal issues that accompany the program, as well as the ongoing need for customer service operations.

Concerns were also raised regarding public awareness of the program's opt-out option. Despite the robust nature of this option, many residents remain unaware, leading to fears that some individuals may feel inadvertently trapped in the program.
