Wimberley declares September as Pride Month to promote equality

The Wimberley City Council convened on September 5, 2024, to address several significant proclamations, including the recognition of Constitution Week and the declaration of September as Bridal Month, aimed at supporting the LGBTQ+ community.

Mayor Jim Childs opened the meeting by confirming a quorum and leading a moment of silence, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The council then proclaimed September 17-23 as Constitution Week, commemorating the 237th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution. Mayor Childs emphasized the importance of the Constitution as a guardian of liberties and encouraged citizens to reaffirm their commitment to the freedoms it guarantees.

In a notable move towards inclusivity, the council also proclaimed September 2024 as Bridal Month, recognizing the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals to the community. The proclamation highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ citizens, including discrimination and mental health risks, and underscored the importance of fostering an environment of acceptance and support.

Rachel Giles, a member of the Wimberley Bridal March committee, addressed the council, articulating the need for a dedicated pride month. She spoke passionately about the historical and ongoing struggles for equal rights faced by the LGBTQ+ community, urging the city to continue its support against rising anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Giles emphasized that the proclamation and the upcoming pride march aim to promote love and understanding, countering the fear and hate that often target marginalized groups.

The meeting concluded with a call for unity and respect within the community, as the city of Wimberley reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity and equality for all its residents.
