City council faces backlash over electrification ordinance repeal

In a recent city council meeting, officials discussed several key agreements aimed at enhancing local rail infrastructure. The council is set to vote on a construction and maintenance agreement with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company for $4,736,444.84, as well as an agreement with the Southern California Regional Rail Authority totaling $1,079,804. Additionally, an authorization and reimbursement agreement with Union Pacific Railroad Company for $520,240 is on the agenda. These agreements require at least five affirmative votes for approval.

The council also plans to authorize a transfer of $2,250,000 from surplus 2009 Measure A funds to support the BNSF UP Quiet Zone Panorama Creech account. Furthermore, the city manager or their designee will be empowered to execute the railroad agreements, including making minor and non-substantive changes.

During the meeting, a public comment was made by Brian Sayana, a physics professor at UC Riverside, who expressed concerns regarding the recent revocation of the building electrification ordinance. Sayana highlighted the ordinance's role in addressing air quality and climate change, emphasizing the need for the city to consider electric alternatives for new infrastructure. He shared personal experiences with electric heating and vehicles, advocating for a shift towards cleaner energy solutions.
