Human trafficking crisis in New Jersey remains largely hidden

In a recent government meeting, discussions highlighted the alarming underreporting of crimes related to gender-based violence and human trafficking in New Jersey. A representative from Abanzar Dreams Free Grama emphasized that many victims, often subjected to coercive control, feel criminalized themselves, leading to a significant lack of reported cases.

The representative noted that definitive statistics on human trafficking, which encompasses child abuse, sexual abuse, and exploitation, are difficult to ascertain due to the stigma and fear surrounding these crimes. However, they provided a sobering insight into the issue, revealing that between 2014 and 2020, their organization served over 850 survivors, ranging in age from 9 to 76 years old.

This discussion underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and support for victims of gender-based violence and human trafficking, as many individuals continue to suffer in silence. The meeting called for more robust measures to address these critical issues and ensure that survivors receive the help they need.
