Oakland moves towards 100% renewable energy for municipal buildings

During a recent city council meeting, Oakland officials discussed a resolution to transition municipal buildings to Ava's 100 plan, which aims to provide 100% renewable energy sourced from wind and solar. Matthew Maultsen, a staff member, presented the resolution, emphasizing its alignment with Oakland's Equitable Climate Action Plan adopted in July 2022. This plan outlines the city's commitment to achieving a clean energy grid by 2030 and 2050.

The resolution, which focuses solely on municipal accounts, was separated from a broader initiative that will address residential and commercial accounts later this year. This decision was made to allow for further outreach and engagement, particularly with low-income and senior residents, as highlighted by council members during the discussion.

Maultsen noted that Oakland would join several neighboring cities, including Berkeley and San Leandro, in adopting this renewable energy plan. A unique aspect of Oakland's resolution is the provision allowing the city administrator to revert to the Bright Choice plan for two years if the city faces severe budget constraints, a consideration given the current tight financial situation.

Council members expressed support for the resolution, with a focus on ensuring clarity and engagement for future residential initiatives. The council plans to revisit the broader outreach strategy later in the year, reinforcing its commitment to equitable energy solutions for all residents.
