Justice Group revolutionizes jail design with mental health focus

The Justice Group, a leader in designing justice-oriented facilities for over 50 years, has recently highlighted its significant role in shaping the landscape of jails across the United States. In the past decade, the firm has been commissioned to design 16 of the 20 largest jails in the country, accounting for approximately 80% of this sector. Their projects range from sprawling facilities in Oklahoma County to high-rise jails in urban settings like downtown Brooklyn, showcasing their versatility in addressing diverse environments.

A key focus of the Justice Group's recent initiatives is the integration of mental health programs within jail facilities. They are pioneering efforts to incorporate better diversion strategies and mental health support for incarcerated individuals. Notably, the Oklahoma County facility includes 378 dedicated beds for inmates with mental health issues, with 112 of these designated for individuals in crisis. This approach aims to provide a structured pathway for inmates, allowing them to transition from maximum security to lower-risk environments, ultimately preparing them for successful reintegration into society.

Discussions are ongoing with local authorities, including the district attorney and Judge Ogden, to enhance the support system for inmates as they navigate through the jail process. The goal is to facilitate smoother transitions into community-based counseling programs, such as the Behavioral Care Center (BCC), thereby improving outcomes for those with mental health challenges upon their release. This innovative model not only addresses immediate needs but also aims to reduce recidivism by equipping individuals with the necessary resources for a successful return to the community.
