Gun buyback program offers gift cards for safe surrender

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed a successful initiative aimed at reducing gun violence by encouraging residents to turn in firearms in exchange for gift cards. The program, which emphasizes safety and responsible gun ownership, allows participants to discreetly surrender their weapons without leaving their vehicles.

Participants are instructed to keep their firearms in the trunk of their cars, where police officers inspect and assess the weapons before issuing gift cards from carefully selected vendors that do not sell firearms. This approach aims to prevent individuals from using the gift cards to purchase new guns immediately after turning in their old ones.

The initiative also addresses the issue of unsecured firearms in homes, particularly in cases where individuals inherit weapons. Officials noted that many people, such as widows who have inherited guns, are willing to turn them in for gift cards, ensuring that these weapons do not pose a risk to children or become targets for theft.

During the meeting, recognition was given to the Fulton Police Department and specific officers who participated in the program. Certificates of appreciation were presented, highlighting the collaborative effort to enhance community safety.
