Pasadena debates crucial housing charter reforms

During a recent government meeting, discussions centered on potential charter reform for the Pasadena Rental Housing Board, specifically focusing on Article 18 of the City Charter. The meeting highlighted significant community engagement, with a total of 99 letters received regarding the proposed amendments.

Of these, 16 letters expressed support for the amendments put forth by the Rental Housing Board, while 61 letters opposed any substantive changes that could weaken existing laws or exempt landlords from regulations related to fair housing. Additionally, 22 letters advocated for further provisions to enhance the charter.

The interim director of the Rent Stabilization Department, Philip Leclair, presented the board's recommended changes, referred to as Measure H. The council is expected to consider these recommendations carefully, given the substantial public interest and the diverse opinions expressed in the correspondence.

As the meeting progressed, it was noted that over 45 public comments were anticipated, indicating a robust community dialogue surrounding the proposed reforms. The council plans to establish time limits for these comments to ensure an organized discussion.
