Oak Park nominated for prestigious community excellence award

The city of Oak Park has been recognized as a finalist for the Michigan Municipal League Community Excellence Award, highlighting its innovative 9 Mile redesign project, which includes the addition of four new parks: a Linear Park, two pocket parks, and a connector park. The award will be announced at the MML Annual Convention on Mackinac Island, and city officials expressed their enthusiasm and commitment to winning the accolade.

In addition to this recognition, Oak Park has secured an $18,000 grant from the Institute for Responsive Government aimed at enhancing election administration. The funding will be utilized to ensure secure, efficient, and accessible election processes, with specific plans for its allocation still under discussion.

During the meeting, community members voiced their concerns and suggestions. Resident Ken Sherman urged the new communications director to revamp the city’s public television station, which has not updated its programming in several years. Another resident, PG, announced plans for a fourth town hall meeting featuring local police chiefs to discuss community safety and engagement, while also emphasizing the importance of educating the public on the implications of Project 2025, which he believes could negatively impact local governance.

The meeting underscored Oak Park's proactive approach to community development and civic engagement, as officials and residents alike work towards enhancing the quality of life in the city.
