Wayne County faces hazardous waste shipment crisis

In a recent government meeting, significant concerns were raised regarding the impending shipment of hazardous waste to Wayne County from a multi-year project by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The resolution, sent by the Conference of Western Wayne (CWW), highlighted that Wayne County officials were not notified about the arrival of approximately 25 semi-trailers of radioactive material, which is expected to occur weekly for over four months. Local representatives expressed worries about public safety and the lack of community input on this matter, urging for better communication and notification from federal authorities.

Additionally, the meeting touched on community engagement initiatives, including the need for more visibility for the Meals on Wheels program, which is currently facing a shortage of drivers. Council members encouraged residents to volunteer, emphasizing the program's critical role in serving nearly 100 individuals in need.

The council also discussed the importance of updating the city’s master plan, which has not seen significant progress since recommendations were made last year. With changing economic conditions and demographic shifts post-COVID-19, officials stressed the urgency of revisiting the plan to better reflect current needs.
