Freedom High School Band Earns Prestigious National Invitation

During a recent government meeting, Freedom High School was recognized for its exceptional achievement in music education. The Freedom High School Wind Ensemble has been invited to participate in the prestigious President's Cup National Concert Band Invitational, set to take place in Washington, D.C. in April 2024. This honor places Freedom High School among only ten elite bands selected from across the nation.

The invitation allows the students to receive instruction from world-class musicians of the United States military premier bands, including the renowned United States Army Band, Pershing's Own. The program will feature sectionals by instrument, small ensemble performances, and clinics led by Colonel Timothy Holton, a retired member of the Army Band.

Malik Harris, a senior and brass captain of the marching band, spoke on behalf of the band director, Jonathan Chesson, who was unable to attend due to personal commitments. Harris expressed gratitude for the support from the school board and central office, which has enabled the band to purchase new uniforms and instruments, including marching tubas and a contrabass clarinet.

The students emphasized the importance of music education, highlighting its role in teaching discipline, leadership, and teamwork. They presented a photograph to the school board as a token of appreciation for their ongoing support, which they believe is crucial for fostering a thriving arts program in the district.

The meeting concluded with congratulations to the students, who are not only excelling in music but also participating in school theater productions, showcasing their diverse talents.
