Council approves resolution to support pregnant firefighters

During a recent city council meeting in Ypsilanti, members approved an amended resolution and discussed a significant letter of agreement aimed at supporting firefighters who may become pregnant. The resolution, introduced by Council Member Sweet and supported by Mayor Pro Tem Wilcoxson, addresses a crucial flaw identified in the previously renegotiated International Firefighters (IFF) contract.

The issue arose from the contract's stipulation that pregnant employees would be required to go on light duty, which would reduce their pay. The newly proposed letter of agreement allows these employees to maintain their regular pay by working day shifts while still fulfilling their normal 54-hour workweek, rather than being limited to a 40-hour workweek as previously mandated during light duty.

Council members expressed their support for the resolution, highlighting its importance in ensuring that pregnant firefighters are not financially disadvantaged. Mayor Pro Tem Wilcoxson inquired about the nature of light duty, confirming that affected employees would perform various tasks around the firehouse, excluding emergency calls.

The council unanimously approved the resolution, reflecting a commitment to fostering a supportive work environment for all city employees. The meeting concluded with the city manager seeking further direction from the council on upcoming resolutions.
