Residents of Elgin are gearing up for a three-day celebration of the Bhagavad Gita, set to take place from July 19 to July 21. The event, which promotes world peace, will feature an interfaith prayer and meditation concert on Friday, followed by Gita chanting on Saturday and a celebration of teachers, or gurus, on Sunday. Organizers encourage community participation, highlighting that the event is free, although registration is recommended for security purposes.
During the meeting, resident Jose Basque raised concerns regarding the potential removal of a local dam, emphasizing its critical role in providing water to the community. He noted that Elgin relies heavily on the Fox River for its water supply, with approximately 94% of the city's raw water sourced from the river. Basque pointed out that climate change poses significant risks, including droughts that have already affected the river's water levels. He argued that removing the dam could jeopardize the water supply for residents and businesses, potentially leading to reliance on external sources.
Basque also highlighted the ecological impact of the dam's removal, warning that local wildlife, including bald eagles, could be adversely affected. He referenced a 2019 report indicating that maintaining the dam cost the city $8,400, suggesting that the financial implications of its removal should be carefully considered. The discussions reflect a growing concern among residents about sustainable water management and environmental preservation in the face of climate challenges.
