Mayor tackles weekend traffic chaos in Surf City

During a recent government meeting, officials addressed ongoing traffic concerns in Surf City, particularly during busy weekends. A council member raised the issue of significant delays, noting that residents have reported waiting up to two hours to reach the traffic circle on South Shore Drive. The member emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting safety concerns associated with the congestion.

In response, the town manager provided an overview of the traffic situation, particularly during peak times such as Memorial Day weekend. On that day, Surf City recorded an astonishing 38,000 vehicles, leading to severe gridlock as a sudden influx of beachgoers attempted to leave simultaneously due to incoming thunderstorms. The manager explained that the traffic bottlenecks occur at several key points, including the merging of vehicles from North Topsail Drive and South Shore Drive, which complicates the flow into the roundabout.

Despite the challenges, the manager noted a positive trend observed during the previous weekend, where 39,000 vehicles were counted without the chaos experienced on Memorial Day. He reported that, unlike the holiday weekend, traffic was heavy but consistently moving, indicating that the situation may improve with better management and planning.
