Residents demand action on water crisis and sanitation concerns

Residents of the Tuscan Villas community in Tamarac expressed their frustrations during a recent city commission meeting, highlighting ongoing issues with water service and proposed sanitation developments. Since their annexation to Tamarac in 2010, residents claim they have faced neglect from city officials, despite paying significant taxes and incurring hefty penalties for water services sourced from Fort Lauderdale.

One resident detailed that their community has paid over $500,000 in penalties related to a monthly water bill of $13,000, with no clear plan for transitioning to Tamarac's water supply. The speaker criticized the city for suggesting the establishment of a sanitation facility near their homes, arguing it would exacerbate existing air quality issues, especially given their proximity to an airport.

John Doherty, Tamarac's Director of Public Services, provided an update on the east side water extension project, which aims to connect Tuscan Villas to the city's water distribution system. He reported that the project is approximately 60% complete in its design phase and is expected to go out to bid in early spring 2024, with completion anticipated by fall 2027. Doherty acknowledged the challenges faced in securing necessary permits and funding, emphasizing the city's commitment to resolving the water service issues.

The meeting also featured discussions on code enforcement in The Woodlands, with residents urging the commission to address ongoing concerns. City officials reassured attendees of their dedication to community engagement and encouraged residents to continue reaching out for updates and support.
