University of Michigan unveils ambitious budget for future

During a recent government meeting, Provost Lori Macaulay presented the proposed budget for the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus for the fiscal year 2025, emphasizing a commitment to accessibility, affordability, and ambitious educational goals under the newly launched Vision 2034 initiative.

Macaulay highlighted that the budget aims to enhance student wellness, safety, and health equity, with increased funding for campus safety measures and support for student well-being initiatives. The university plans to expand online learning opportunities and invest in high-impact learning experiences, such as study abroad programs, to ensure all students can benefit from transformative educational experiences.

The proposed budget includes a 2.9% tuition increase for in-state undergraduates and a 4.9% increase for out-of-state undergraduates, alongside a 6% rise in housing rates. Despite these increases, Macaulay noted that 63% of resident undergraduates do not pay the full tuition price due to financial aid, with 31% paying no tuition at all. The budget also anticipates a 2.5% increase in state funding, which constitutes 13% of the general fund budget.

In addition to financial considerations, the budget allocates resources towards climate action initiatives, including the expansion of electric bus fleets and the establishment of the Climate Futures Lab. It also supports civic engagement efforts, such as anti-bias training and nonpartisan voter education programs.

Macaulay concluded by expressing gratitude to faculty, staff, and board members for their commitment to maintaining the university's excellence, positioning the institution to leverage its strengths for the benefit of all.
